Around 100,000 fresh free-range eggs
leave New Field Farm near Wisbech every week, collected three times a week
in refrigerated lorries by Noble Foods and distributed, via Noble Foods'
packing station to shops in the area under the Norfolk Farm Eggs brand. This
slick operation means that fresh, top quality and locally produced eggs are
available to consumers with minimum delay.
Noble Foods has worked closely with
Tastes of Anglia to promote its local eggs brand that brings locally
produced food to 'local' customers.
Back on the farm Lynne Jarvis-Lee is
dedicated to the wellbeing of her 15,000 Hyline hens in the heart of East
Anglia's fenlands. Her girls - as Lynne calls them - want for nothing.
Lynne and Paul moved from Wisbech town
centre two years' ago. "We wanted to move into the country," says Paul,
although he admits he's really a townie and it was quite a change, but one
that he doesn't regret in the slightest.
Lynne, on the other hand, comes from a
farming family and has relished the chance to run her own business and work
outdoors - a welcome change from her job in a solicitor's office in town.
When the block of land came up just north
of Wisbech they went for it and put in planning for a poultry unit, which,
although getting it was reasonably straight forward, gave them both a few
sleepless nights.
"We also had to commit to a new hen house
and draw up business plans," adds Lynne. "We were adamant it had to be
timber and look attractive. We also invested in packing equipment and an
indoor area where the children could play whilst we were packing eggs. I'm
glad we did as it has all worked really well."
Hens at New Field Farm are free to roam
on a 16 hectare range that has been recently planted with more than 3,000
trees - a mixture of native deciduous species. Until the trees are well
established, Lynne has also added some man-made wooden shelters to the
range, to provide the birds with plenty of cover and to help encourage them
out of their house and into the fresh air.
"Planting large areas with native trees
means that we are putting something back in to the environment," adds Lynne.
"We're also providing a great habitat for the hens - they like the shade and
foliage - and it's a lovely place to work. We're also in the process of
planting a hedge all around the edge of the range, which will also provide
the birds with some additional shelter."
Lynne makes her first visit to the unit -
just 100 metres from the farmhouse - at 6am every morning.
By 7am, and after Lynne's first
inspection to check all is well with feeders and drinkers, her two daughters
Ashleigh and Erin may well have joined her to help open the pop holes. They
too enjoy having the hens around and, with father Paul, they will help out
at the weekends.
During the week Lynne has help from Edyta
for four hours a day to pack the eggs and carry out routine jobs. By
lunchtime most of the eggs are packed and the hens are out and about on the
range - or if its extreme weather - very hot or very cold - they'll be
indoors enjoying fresh feed and water or having a sleep.
And before bedtime the pop holes have to
be closed to keep the hens safe in their house and give them time to sleep,
eat and most importantly, lay their eggs in the nesting box ready for
collection the next morning.
"We wander up at dusk and by then most of
my girls are already indoors. We encourage a few stragglers indoors then
close up for the night. In winter this will be by 5pm but in mid summer it
can be as late as 10pm or 11pm. The hours might not always be very social
but it's a very satisfying job - happy hens producing lovely eggs that are
sold locally."
"Tastes of Anglia is delighted to be
supporting Noble Foods 'Local Farm Egg' brand and believe that it is a
welcome initiative that promotes regional provenance to the larger retailers
and ensure that high quality local farm eggs can reach even more customers,"
says Tastes of Anglia CEO Julie West.
Marketing Manager Simon Wilson adds,
“Consumers are increasingly asking where their food comes from, we are
delighted to be able to showcase farms such as Lynne’s on our website (mynorfolkeggs.co.uk),
so you can rest assured you are getting a genuine Norfolk egg.” Look out for
the pack in Tesco stores across the county.
