Research centre to close

A horticultural research centre in Kirton is closing due to operating costs.

The University of Warwick has decided to shut its 120-acre site in Willington Road after four years and the move could result in the loss of up to ten jobs.

Kirton Research Centre, a department of Warwick Horticultural Research International, has lost more than £1m.

The site is believed to be losing £280,000 a year.

A university spokesman praised staff for their hard work and said: "Commercial and public research funding support for the site has been consistently and significantly below its operating costs."

The centre has 46 hectares of grade one silt land and a diverse range of facilities which give it the ability to test the shelf and vase life of plants.

Operations are expected to continue on the site until early 2009.

During that time the University of Warwick will explore options for the future use of the site in consultation with other research providers.
